"Colonists Leaving England For Jamestown"Description: "In 1606 King James I granted a charter to the London Company, which had been organized by some of the great London merchants for the purpose of making settlement in Virginia. On December 19, 1606 a company of 105 'gentlemen, carpenters and laborers,' set sail on the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery under the command of Captain Christopher Newport. After a long and stormy voyage they passed through the Virginia Capes in April 1607, touched at Cape Henry, Point Comfort, and Hampton, and finally landed at Jamestown, May 13th, 1607, where they established the first permanent English-speaking settlement in the New World." |
