In preparation for World War I, Camp Abraham Eustis was established in 1918 as a coast artillery replacement center for Fort Monroe and a balloon observation school. Named for the first commanding officer of Fort Monroe, Brevet Brigadier General Abraham Eustis, Fort Eustis is situated on approximately 8,300 acres of land that was originally owned by John Rolfe (husband of the Indian Princess Pocahontas). Locally known as Mulberry Island, Fort Eustis is bounded on the west and south by the James River and on the east by the Warwick River. Fort Eustis is now one of 16 Training and Doctrine Command Installations.
