Named after the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe (1817-1825), Fort Monroe was constructed between 1819 and 1834. Point Comfort has played a role in the defense of our nation since the Capt. Christopher Newport and his three ship fleet passed here approaching their final destination of  Jamestown. In 1609 Algernourne Fort  was built at Point Comfort to defend against raids from the Spanish and the Powhatan alliance of Indian tribes. After Algernourne Fort burned in 1612, several attempts were made at fortifying Point Comfort; all were either abandoned or destroyed by hurricanes. In 1728 construction of Fort George began. Considered a fortification worthy of any foe, this was also destroyed by the great hurricane of 1749. After the British invaded and burned Hampton Roads' cities (and eventually Washington) during the War of 1812, construction began in earnest in 1819 on Fortress Monroe.    More ...
