Hampton Roads history markers

Located on the southeastern tip of the Virginia peninsula on the Chesapeake Bay, Hampton was the second stop the colonists made prior to landing at Jamestown. The original name for this Hampton Roads community was Elizabeth City, but has been know as Hampton since 1680. Free public education in America began in Hampton with land grants from Thomas Eaton and Benjamin Syms. Learn more about the history of Hampton here.
