Description: "Newport News' Victory Arch provides a continuing memorial to American servicemen and women. Grateful Peninsula citizens built a temporary Arch dedicated April 13, 1919, for the victorious troops marching back from Over There. By 1960 maintenance of the wood and plaster Arch was impractical. A permanent arch of stone was rededicated May 30, 1962."

Army Location: 25th Street and West Avenue, Newport News VA 23607 Description: "The splendid natural harbor of Hampton Roads served the nation as a military port of embarkation in the Spanish American War and two World Wars. In World War I, headquarters were set up on July 11, 1917, and vast shipments of troops and materiel were processed. During World War II 1,667,000 people passed through here from June 15, 1942, to Sept. 1, 1945."
