East Tyler Street and ramp to I-64 near the entrance to Hampton University. Description: "To the west, on the grounds of Hampton Institute, is the tree under which Mrs. Mary Peake, a freedwoman, taught children of former slaves in 1861. Nearby stood the Butler School, a free school established in 1863 for colored children."
