Welcome to the Hampton Roads History and Penny Postcard Tour. The mission of Historic Hampton Roads.com is to provide a central Internet repository for the documentation of the American history resources of the Hampton Roads region. Our company philosophy is "start with the basics" and what is more basic that our heritage (individually and collectively) as Americans. Our fourth President (James Madison, 1809-1817) once said: "the diffusion of knowledge is the only true guardian of liberty". By disseminating this knowledge via the Internet, we hope to increase the awareness of Hampton Roads' residents to the availability of the multitude of history resources in our region and also their fragility. As you browse through the history resources on our site, you will notice that several of the postcards from our collection and many of the History Markers represent historical resources that no longer exist. The reasons why these resources have disappeared is varied: natural disaster, neglect, expansion, etc. Whatever the reason, a part of our collective heritage is gone. We want this site to remind our residents of the history available in Hampton Roads and the important role each of us can have in helping to maintain these resources by simply learning about, visiting and supporting what's in our backyard.
History tours of Hampton Roads
Our method of choice to begin the documentation of our history is through our postcard collection. Think about it for a minute ...
» American history begins here,
» a strong Military presence has been part of our life since our genesis as a nation,
» and, we have always been a favorite vacation resort.
Each of these segments of our tourism industry (history, military and beaches and resorts) is well documented through postcards. During the era of our collection, 1873 through 1951, postcards were the equivalent of email, digital cameras, cell phones and the Interstate system today. People would send postcards to friends and relatives from their Military base, one of our many world famous vacation resorts, their school or just as they were passing through our region. Sometimes these would be short notes informing them that they would write a letter later, other times it was to document their vacation or military experience here, or for a myriad of other reasons. Postcards provide a written and pictorial documentation of (in the case of Hampton Roads) the beginning of American history, family genealogy and other important interpretations of our historical resources.
Throughout the Postcard Tour, you will see History marker. These are the History Markers you see when you're driving on the city streets or state routes. If you're lucky, there will be a nice pull-off area where you can safely stop and read the information. As a general rule, though, you may notice the Title but not much else. We are busy documenting these markers and are posting their information with our postcards. Our goal is to provide a virtual tour of the history markers and other history resources in Hampton Roads.
