Advertising public promotion of something: the promotion through public announcements in newspapers or on the radio, television, or Internet of something such as a product, service, event, or vacancy in order to attract or increase interest in it.  BACK
Aggressive Tactics Promises to submit your web site (and email address) to hundreds or thousands of search engines and directories. The vast majority of these are thinly disguised email and domain collection databases. Some of these will actually add your domain name to their search engine - as though it will have some positive impact. Almost immediately, the email address you provided becomes very popular --- for all the SPAMers. Any increase in visitors will be accidental and short-lived.
Owns and/or recommends shadow domains. These are also known as throwaway or ghost domains and are recommended by unethical Internet Marketing/SEO's to increase traffic and link popularity --- neither of which will be accomplished. The major search engines provide for this in their algorithm and will ban your site from their database when this tactic is detected.
Requires links to their other clients on your web site. NEVER allow any links that leave your domain without your written approval! Generally a link to their web site is allowed, but make sure you visit their site first to confirm they are not using some of these tactics.   BACK
Domain Name Also referred to as URL (Uniform Resource Locator). I break this down into four (4) parts:
Standard: http:// You have no control over this. This is the standard used on the Internet to display information. Stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Most browsers automatically append this to anything you type in the address bar.
Prefix - www. (World Wide Web),
Your company name. For example historichamptonroads. Maximum of 63 characters.

Extension - Always strive to have the .com and/or .org extensions. These extensions (along with .net) are the most widely recognized and are easiest for the consumer - your prospective client - to remember. BACK

Completed Domain Name --- www.historichamptonroads.com

Doorway Pages Our definition of a doorway page is: "any page on your domain that is optimized for a relevant keyword phrase for one (or more) of the major search engines". This page should:
  • present relevant content to your human visitor
  • through the standard navigation structure of your web site
  • in a manner that emphasizes your relevant keyword phrase to the search engine.

Upfront planning using our small business web design and Internet Marketing tips, as well as the many other available resources, will ensure that your Internet presence is designed from the ground up to provide relevance both to your human and search engine visitors.   BACK

Link Farms
Free-For-All
Not a generally accepted Internet Marketing method. Contains web sites that link to other sites for the sole purpose of increasing their link popularity. Relevance of information to the topic is not considered. The major search engines and directories consider sites that participate in link farms (link stuffing, Free-For-All) as SPAM and will exclude them (and you) from their index.  BACK
